About Susan Schwerd

Susan Schwerd, MD, LCPC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor practicing in Maryland who has worked in the mental health field since 1999. She earned a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Temple University and began her clinical career in a large outpatient mental health organization, where she spent seven years in a variety of roles, including several years as an assistant clinical director, before moving into private practice. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, she spent a decade as Director of Human Resources for a mid-sized corporation, experience that informs her coaching work focused on personal growth and professional productivity.

Her aim is to support healing, growth, and transformation. Grounded in a psychodynamic orientation, she describes her method as "active eclectic," drawing on cognitive behavioral, Adlerian, and solution-focused interventions as appropriate. She helps clients explore underlying reasons for their conflicts, identify patterns that keep them stuck, and develop new, healthier responses to present-day challenges.

Her practice addresses mood disorders and chronic mental illness, anger and stress management, emotional self-regulation, trauma, chronic pain and medical illness or physical injury, grief and loss, and other difficult life transitions. Neurofeedback, Eye Movement Integration, and Clinical Hypnosis are commonly used as adjuncts to psychotherapy in her work. Online clients may learn self-hypnosis and breathing techniques as tools to manage chronic pain and anxiety and to regain a greater sense of control.

She has extensive experience working with veterans and their families in the Washington DC area and has received specialized training from military organizations for non-military professionals. Susan offers Live Video and Phone sessions and will respond to a limited number of messages between appointments, but she does not conduct therapy via Live Chat or messaging. PLEASE NOTE - her SUMMER HOURS are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12 noon - 6pm; Tuesday & Thursday 5, 6, 7 pm.
